After a successful tour with hard rock band Sixx:A.M., VAMPS came to rock New York in their first headlining US show since 2013. We were very excited to sit down with the guys for a bit to talk about the tour and their recent activities.

Nippon Project: First off, I want to say welcome back to the US and New York. Lets begin by having you guys introduce each other. With the introduction, please tell us where the other member could be found most often when not onstage.

Hyde: This is Kaz, guitarist of VAMPS and on tour I think you can find him usually taking a nap on the bus.

Kaz: This is vocalist of VAMPS, Hyde. I see him on his laptop a lot. So, maybe he’s working on something(chuckles).

How was touring the US with Sixx:A.M.?

Hyde: We've been through a lot on this tour. This isn't our first time to play in the states, but we have never done a big tour like this here, so everything was very memorable. We have learned a lot through the entire tour with Sixx:A.M. We really loved it.

Anything particularly memorable you can tell us about?

Hyde: The day before yesterday was the last day of the Modern Vintage tour, so we sent a gift to each of the Sixx:A.M. members. We gave them each yukata with Sixx:A.M.’s name spelled out on them, but instead of English, I came up with the Kanji for the band’s name. In addition, I told them how I felt throughout the entire tour and that I was grateful to have shared a lot of precious moments. And just that moment, giving the guys the gifts, was a very moving feeling for us. At the end of the day we received many messages from the guys in appreciation, not being able to thank us enough. It was a pretty great feeling.

What would you say the difference is between touring several venues with a band and doing festival lives?

Kaz: Going on the road with bands like Sixx:A.M. and Apocalyptica, doing the show the show with them, it’s kind of like becoming a family. We spend a lot of time together. But, when it comes to the festivals, I feel it’s kind of like a tournament. Who gets the headlining spot for the next year. Starting from the beginning and stepping up to the next level, until one day you become the headliner. So that is the biggest difference I think.

You recently released BLOODSUCKERS in the US and the UK through Spinefarm Records, how do you think this album differs from your past albums?

Hyde: We came up with the best we could do on this album. We've been producing ourselves for a long time. We have been thinking a lot and spent a really long time to come up with this album. Just the quality of the album, the quality of each song is to our expectation so we feel really confident about it.

VAMPS hosts several festivals and various band live events in Japan, like VAMPARK FEST and the Halloween Junky Orchestra Halloween party. If possible, would you consider organizing one of those events here in the US or the UK?

Hyde: We have been talking about it of course, doing the same thing in the states or the UK but it’s a bit difficult to pull off, I think. There are so many bands and artists, money wise, and other things, it would just be tons of work. So that's kind of why it just hasn't happened so far. But who knows what’s going to happen in the future right?

Speaking of Halloween Junky Orchestra. I always wondered how you came up with the idea of such brilliant collaboration?

Hyde: Well, we have been doing the Halloween shows for a while now, but when we started we didn't have a song to tie the whole thing together. I always wanted to doing something together, so I thought ‘Why don’t we have a song that we could all sing? If we can, it would be so good!’ So eventually I came up with the idea of making the song for everyone, and that’s how it all came together.

You guys have had such a busy year already, but could you let us know what’s going on next as a final comment?

Hyde: After tonight's show, we will be going back to Japan for once and right after that we have gigs in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Kaz: After that we will be heading to Europe for another tour so everyone else please wait for us.

Hyde: and USA, we can’t wait to see you again.

Nippon Project would like to thank Universal staff, VAMPS and anyone else who made this interview possible.
