sleepy.ab's music is delicate, allows one to dream, yet has a feeling of melancholy. The "ab" in their name stands for "abstract" and describes their flowing, floating landscapes of sound. The vocals undoubtedly cause one to think of Thom Yorke of Radiohead.

In 1998, the group was formed in Hokkaido with Tsuyoshi Nariyama (vocals), Kensuke Yamauchi (guitar), and Hideyuki Tanaka (bass).

In the year 2000, the band won first place on the music competition HOT LINE2000 in their hometown.

In March of 2001 they were contracted under Label Chameleon. In July their song, pain, was used for the compilation Ginga.

Drummer Hideki Tsuha joined the band in April 2002. Their first album, face the music, appeared on December 11th of the same year.
